WHO WE ARE

Heather McCarthy and Lee Ford are two loving moms, a lawyer and a nurse, connected by the shared misfortune that no parent should ever have to experience. Both of their children were harmed unnecessarily by inappropriately prescribed medications.

Through social media, Heather and Lee have connected with thousands of others suffering from the same fluoroquinolone and psychotropic drug toxicity, akathisia, and adverse-treatment reactions. Several of them, including Heather, have lost loved ones. The experience has compelled Heather and Lee to create this platform to increase awareness of the importance of informed consent and evaluation of risk vs. benefit of any health treatment.

Meet Shea

Heather McCarthy’s son Shea had just completed his freshman year of college when he was given a large dose of Levaquin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, prior to surgery to correct a deviated septum. After beginning a 21-day course of the prescription, Shea began to experience a host of adverse effects, including digestive issues, confusion, and anxiety, which he immediately connected to the drug.

Meet Charlie

In 2016 Lee Ford’s daughter, Charlie, then a 13-year-old competitive swimmer in Canada, was prescribed the fluoroquinolone antibiotic Levaquin. Within a week of taking the drug, Charlie experienced a multitude of symptoms that included extreme joint and nerve pain, severe headaches, cardiac issues, gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, and unexplained anxiety.

“Prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States and Europe. Around half of those who die have taken their drugs correctly; the other half die because of errors, such as too high a dose or use of a drug despite contraindications.”
